An honest take

Is the Roxy Dinner Show worth it?

The case for it

As a production it's in a different league from Rio's older samba shows: a director from the Olympic ceremonies, more than sixty performers, a restored Art Deco cinema with a reactive dome, and a structure that covers the whole country rather than one neighbourhood's Carnival. TIME put it on its World's Greatest Places list in 2025 and travellers on the booking platform rate it highly. For a single night that explains Brazil, it's the one to pick.

The honest caveats

Three things to weigh. It's expensive by Rio standards, particularly the dinner tiers, and drinks are extra on all but the premium ticket. It's a big room — several hundred guests — so it's spectacle, not intimacy, and tables aren't allocated when you book. And a few reviewers find it cold: the air conditioning is strong enough that the venue itself tells you to bring a jacket.

Who'll love it

Travellers who want one grand night out in Rio; anyone interested in Brazilian music and dance beyond samba; couples marking an occasion, for whom the premium tier makes sense; and first-time visitors who'd like the country's regions introduced in ninety minutes before they see any of them. It's also a good answer to the question of what to do on a Copacabana evening.

Who might skip it

If your Rio budget is tight, a samba night in Lapa or a rehearsal at a samba school gives you the music at a fraction of the price, with more rough edges and more locals. If you want an intimate room, this isn't one. And if you'd rather your dinner and your show were separate events, the show-only ticket plus a restaurant of your choosing may suit you better than the dinner tiers.

Getting the most from it

If you book, a few things tip it toward the best version: pick the tier before the date, book weekends early, arrive at the start of your seating for the choice of tables, dress smart-casual and bring a layer, and give the regions a little listening beforehand so the show's journey lands. Book through GetYourGuide with free cancellation so a change of plans doesn't cost you the night.
